If you have a business online one thing that you might be having trouble with is getting your emails delivered. Commercial email often ends up in the Spam folder instead of the Inbox of your customers.
I am not talking about Spam emails. I hate Spam and I highly recommend that you stay away from sending Spam. It generally won’t be very effective, and it will nearly certainly end up giving you a poor reputation and eventually hurt your business.
However, there are also legitimate commercial emails that need to be sent! For example, if somebody buys an eBook from you, you will send them an email with the download links for their purchase. That is a legitimate commercial email that the customer needs to get! Unfortunately, though, when that email is received by most email providers (GMail, Yahoo and any other email provider), there is a great likelihood that they will place your email in the Spam folder. That is not good for you, nor is it good for your customer!
I know this is true, because I have owned a number of websites over the years, sites which sell products and services. For example, I have a site where I sell electronic books. It is a very busy site and I sell many books. A lot of the emails sent to customers, though, end up in the Spam folder. Somebody will spend their money purchasing a book, we email out a download link, then at some later time the customer will email me complaining that they never received what they purchased! Well, they did get the link to download their purchase, but it is in their Spam folder, which they did not check.
Recently, I found a solution to this problem, though. Have you heard of “transactional email”? It is email that was sent due to an action by the email recipient. For example, somebody bought a book, that caused us to send the email with the download links. That is transactional email. Well, there are companies that specialize in sending transactional email, and it is nearly certain to end up in the inbox instead of the Spam folder!
Mandrill
I signed up for one of these companies just a few days ago. The transactional email provider that I chose was Mandrill. Mandrill is owned by MailChimp, a company that is very well known as an email list provider. They know how to handle mass emailing, and they know how to ensure that your email winds up in the inbox, not the Spam folder. I use MailChimp for operating a number of email Newsletters and they have always done a great job for me.
After signing up with Mandrill you go through their site and set up your account, which is quite easy, then you are ready to go! If you are using WordPress as your site platform it is very easy to get started! Mandrill has a plugin called WPMandrill that will make things very easy for you. Install the plugin, then configure the settings. After configuration you can send a test email and make sure that it goes through OK, and you are good to go!
